Signature Works
Themes of Nature, Family, The Self, and Nostalgia flow together in my work like an unbridled tide; not always cohesive, but coexisting nonetheless. Bodies and houses alike act as necessary vessels for life. Both show scars and markings which carry meaning and nostalgia for very specific times in our lives. It is almost impossible to look at a bodily scar without thinking of how we got it and the events surrounding that time. Houses too gather scars (marks of age and time). My favorite houses are the ones which look lived in; the ones where you can imagine a family out front and what might have caused that crooked shutter or patch of mismatched grass.
When I think of self-reflection, my mind goes to water. The imagery from Kate Chopin’s seminal novel The Awakening comes to mind. As Chopin’s character takes in the lapping of the ocean waves, experiencing the weightlessness of the water; she finally feels free. There are endless lessons in nature. These particular lessons must be felt in order to absorb them. Art can be a tool to transcribe enlightenments, but the viewer must draw upon personal experience, memories, feelings, etc. in order to translate the knowledge for their own use.
My work is meant to evoke feelings. My hope is that when looking at one of my works, the viewer is transported to a time or place familiar to them. Each viewer may interpret as they please. I do not believe there is one right way to take-in my work or any other work; each piece should act as an experience unique to the person viewing it.
